FSMA? LGMA? YSPC? WHEN YOU’RE INVOLVED WITH FOOD SAFETY YOU’LL HEAR A LOT OF ACRONYMS AND TERMS USED THAT YOU MAY NOT BE FAMILIAR WITH, THIS GLOSSARY WILL HELP YOU PARSE OUT EXACTLY WHAT IS BEING SAID.

ACRONYMS

  • FSMA: Food Safety Modernization Act, typically pronounced “fisma” the nationwide food safety act that went into effect in January of 2018 and aims to standardize food safety practices throughout the entire food supply chain in order to prevent food borne illnesses

  • GAP: Good Agricultural Practices, specific methods at the field level that create food that is safe and wholesome. These include things such as worker hygiene practices and equipment maintenance, among many others

  • GMP: Good Manufacturing Practices, specific methods in processing and handling that create food that is safe and wholesome

  • HACCP: Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points

  • LGMA: Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, commodity-specific food safety guidelines for the production and harvest of leafy greens. This is an agreement voluntarily entered into by growers and shippers of leafy greens in Arizona and California and verified yearly by third-party audits. You may also hear “Arizona LGMA” or “California LGMA”

  • YAAC: Yuma Area Agriculture Council

  • YSPC: Yuma Safe Produce Council, an industry group based in Yuma, Arizona made up of growers, harvesters, and shippers, formed with the purpose of sharing ideas and information regarding food safety
